hi there-my name is john bevan-son of noel bevan who owned myth from 1967 until he sold her to a french owner in about 1972/3-who ran her as a sail training vessel around brittany for a couple of years-she sank in suspicious circumstances in front of a ferry in calm weather-off ushant.

she was still in sound condition as had raced in the 1968 ostar and the 1970 round britain-and had been largely rebuilt and strengthened by my father-there was suspicion that she was sunk deliberately-but no evidence to prove that.

i think that it was maid of malham that caught fire and sank in the pacific.

myth never had an engine fitted-she was always sailed everywhere.

i sailed my first transatlantic passage in myth in 1968-from newport -rhode island- to plymouth england-and have fond memories of sailing such a magnificent yacht as a child of 7 to 12yrs old.

it is sad that even beken of cowes has now hardly any images of myth.

hope this will clarify how she was lost.

Myth's bow was modified once. I remember walking round her in the yard at the time. Some traditionalists thought her straight sheer made her ugly, but I thought she was a beautiful boat.

I saw her ashore and in tough condition in the USA along the Hudson River in 1985.

I'm certain it was her - evidenced both by her lines and her name still on her transom.

I've been looking and enquiring but have no leads to her current condition or location.

I saw MYTH OF MALAM in Newport, Rhode Island at the conclusion of the singled handed trans-Atlantic in 1967. My skipper had lent MOM's skipper an electric generator that worked from stove heat. We visited for a few days and he said his great loneliness at sea was tempered by visitors he welcomed over the transom for supper. He decided not to worry about these fanasties then one calm, quiet day he chose to ignore great commotion behind him until the SS FRANCE came along side with 1000's at her rails. They dropped an oilcloth covered bundle for dinner. Pheasant, champaign etc. and steamed off toward New York.

Hello,
In 1967 I was at naval college in Plymouth when Noel and Myth were preparing for that year’s Single Handed Trans Atlantic race. Noel and my father were friends and I would go down to Millbay docks most evenings and weekends to lend a hand. Doc Hadfield and family were also around..
I clearly remember the heat source electric power generator that was on board to keep batteries charged for primitive reporting and navigation lights. This equipment was provided whittingly or otherwise by Marconi/GEC in Frimley.
Sometime later, I recall Noel saying that “the bl***Dy French sunk my yacht”in fine weather. Such a shame.
For some time I’ve been looking for a photo of Myth in SHTA mode, without success.
Can anyone help?
